A bit about my own journey

On this website, I rarely talk about myself. But for this article, I felt like I need to tell you about me.

This website is entirely in English. However, I am from Belgium and my native language is French. And my wife is Colombian and I speak fluently Spanish. But if today I speak fluently 3 languages, trust me I am not born with any special skill. I just get out of my comfort zone and learned the hard way.

In Belgium, we have 3 national languages : French, Dutch and German. German is not widely spread (approximately 75.000 german speakers for 5 millions French Speakers and 6 millions Dutch Speakers). When I started working in Brussels, my Dutch wasn’t great. But my boss told me to answer every phone calls. I had to get out of my comfort zone and started speaking Dutch. Was it enough ? Not at all… I hated it to be honest. But I tried to listen more and more to Dutch radio while in the car. However, quickly I left Belgium and… let’s admit it… Dutch isn’t very useful in the rest of the world.

I arrived in Spain and the only thing I could say was ordering a chicken and eventually a beer. In the office, it was very international (and mainly French). So the first language I learned was actually English.

But after 2 years living in Spain, I was frustrated that my level of Spanish was still sh**t. I decided, one more time, to get out of my comfort zone.

And started to take classes. First, during lunch time. Easy ? Definitely not. When all my friends and colleagues were having their break, I was studying.

Was it enough ? Not at all… I had the feeling to plateau.

So I hired another Spanish-teacher and she helped me a lot. Not only because she was a good Spanish teacher, but also because she couldn’t speak English or French. And she was quite cheap so I could take more classes with her.

Lastly, I got a call from a recruiter for a job. I told them look, my spanish is really bad and the jobs I had while I was in Spain were only in English. I remember my future boss telling me it was 100% fine because it will also be in English. Which was a big lie. I got to work mostly in Madrid, in a bank, and everything was in Spanish : meetings, documentations, coffee conversations, etc.

Which was hard !!!

When I arrived home, I was exhausted.

But in few months only… my Spanish skill was great ! And now I can easily speak Spanish and sometimes dream in this language.

How to set achievable language learning goals and create a plan for success

To apply the Effort Zone strategy to language learning, it’s important to set specific, achievable goals and create a plan for success. Begin by identifying your reasons for learning the language and what you hope to achieve. Are you learning for personal or professional reasons? Do you want to achieve fluency or simply be able to hold a conversation? Knowing your motivation and goals will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the learning process.

Next, set specific goals for what you want to achieve. Instead of setting a vague goal like “learn Spanish”, break it down into specific, achievable goals, such as “learn 50 new vocabulary words this week” or “practice speaking for 30 minutes every day”. By setting specific goals, you can track your progress and adjust your study habits accordingly.

Once you have your goals in mind, create a plan for achieving them. This might involve finding a language exchange partner, signing up for a language course, or using language learning apps and resources. Experiment with different methods and find what works best for you.

It’s also important to make a commitment to consistent practice. Rather than cramming for hours before a test, try to practice for shorter, regular sessions throughout the week. This will help you retain information better and build your language skills over time.

By setting achievable language learning goals and creating a plan for success, you can apply the Effort Zone strategy to your language learning journey and make steady progress towards fluency. So, grab a pen and paper, write down your goals, and get started on your language learning adventure today!

Staying Motivated and Overcoming Obstacles on Your Language Learning Journey

Learning a new language can be challenging, and it’s easy to become discouraged when progress seems slow or when obstacles arise. However, with the right mindset and strategies, you can stay motivated and overcome obstacles on your language learning journey.

One strategy for staying motivated is to track your progress and celebrate small wins. Keep a journal or spreadsheet of your language learning activities and note your achievements, such as completing a lesson or mastering a new grammar rule. Celebrating small wins can help you stay motivated and build momentum towards achieving your larger goals.

Another strategy is to find a language exchange partner or join a language learning community. Connecting with other language learners can provide support, encouragement, and accountability, and can also provide opportunities to practice speaking and listening skills.

When obstacles arise, it’s important to approach them with a growth mindset. Instead of giving up or becoming discouraged, view obstacles as opportunities to learn and grow. For example, if you’re struggling with a particular grammar rule, seek out additional resources or practice exercises to help you master it. By approaching obstacles with a growth mindset, you can turn challenges into opportunities for progress and improvement.

Finally, it’s important to stay inspired and engaged with the language you’re learning. This might involve reading books, watching movies, or listening to music in your target language, or simply finding ways to incorporate the language into your daily life. By staying engaged with the language, you can maintain your motivation and enthusiasm for learning.

By applying these strategies for staying motivated and overcoming obstacles, you can successfully apply the Effort Zone strategy to your language learning journey and achieve fluency in your target language.

Marya, my girlfriend’s story

Marya is my girlfriend. She is from Colombia, we met in Abu Dhabi. I speak fluently Spanish because I have lived 8 years in Spain. But she doesn’t speak any French, my native language.

We are preparing a trip to Belgium and she wants to learn French.

So I helped her and we set specific goals for herself, such as learning 50 new vocabulary words each week and practicing speaking for 30 minutes each day.

She creates a study schedule and mixes up her activities, using resources like Duolingo and Anki for spaced repetition.

To challenge ourselves and step out of our comfort zone, we’ve made it a habit to speak French at home for at least 30 minutes a day. If your wife speaks too much, I strongly recommend this technique ! It became the most quiet minutes of the day ! Joke aside, we do speak French and we also decided to watch movies in French, with subtitles.

By applying the Effort Zone strategy, Maria is learning French and soon, she will be able to communicate with my friends and family during our trip to Belgium

In conclusion…

… applying the Effort Zone strategy to language learning can be a powerful tool for achieving fluency in a new language. By setting specific, achievable goals, creating a solid study plan, practicing consistently and efficiently, and tracking progress towards your goals, you can make steady progress towards language mastery.

While language learning can be challenging at times, with the right mindset and strategies, anyone can succeed. So, embrace the Effort Zone strategy, stay motivated, and keep striving towards your language learning goals. With hard work and dedication, fluency is within reach!
